Are plastic bottles and caps safe?
As parents, we all want the best for our children. That means we critically examine the products we use every day. One topic that's received a lot of attention lately is the use of plastic bottles and caps. Are they safe? What happens when we reuse them, especially in combination with high temperatures? In this blog post, we share our insights and research on this topic, so you can make the best choice with confidence.
š” Did you know?
DiBP is a plasticizer found not only in bottles but also in many other everyday plastic products such as toys, shoes, and bottle caps. It can enter the body through inhalation or skin contact. The EU has restricted the use of this substance, but unfortunately, it is still frequently found in products we use every day.
DiBP is known as a plasticizer and is restricted in the EU because it can be harmful to reproduction and the development of unborn children. Although the amount of DiBP found remained below the European limit, its presence is a concern. This is especially true because children are exposed to these substances not only through bottles, but also through toys, clothing, and other consumer products.
What does this mean for our stainless steel bottles and plastic caps?
Seeing these results, we critically examined the bottles we offer. We primarily sell stainless steel bottles, as they are known for their durability and safety. However, our attention was drawn to the caps, which are often made of plastic. This got us thinking: could these caps also be harmful? Should we still offer these bottles? We contacted several experts, including Iris de Goede, an orthomolecular therapist and expert in hormone balance. She gave us some reassuring news: "The plastic caps don't pose a direct problem because they don't come into contact with the liquid in the bottle. The only important thing is that you don't put the caps in the dishwasher and don't expose them to high temperatures."
Many plastic products can release harmful substances when exposed to heat, such as bisphenol A (BPA), which is often associated with hormone disruption. Therefore, it's important not to expose plastic bottles to extreme heat, such as in the dishwasher or direct sunlight. We also received information from the Anti-Gif Foundation, an organization committed to a toxic-free world. According to director Annelies den Boer, European regulations on chemicals are outdated. She states: "It takes an average of more than 19 years for hazardous chemicals to be removed from the market.
Meanwhile, scientific evidence is growing that substances such as PFAS and plasticizers pose health risks, especially in children.ā This emphasizes the need for us to handle these materials responsibly.
