Breastfeeding | Lactation consultant Roxane Liewes
Kideo.store collaborates with a number of excellent professionals and specialists.
The same goes for a lactation consultant.
Let me introduce myself: my name is Roxane Liewes and together with Bianca Jansen (currently on maternity leave, Bianca will join our team again in May 2024), we are the faces of Babypraktijk Noord.
At Babypraktijk Noord, we offer a variety of services related to pregnancy and baby. We primarily work as lactation consultants in Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe. Also check out our Instagram for more information @babypraktijknoord
What exactly does a lactation consultant do?
A lactation consultant is a specialist in breastfeeding and all its aspects. We offer breastfeeding support when things aren't going as expected. For example, if you have doubts or concerns about latching on, pain during feeding, or a baby who isn't growing well.
When to consult a lactation consultant?
I could easily list a whole list here, but to keep it clear and easy to read, I'll make a selection for you.
- pain in your breasts (e.g. during feeding)
- insufficient growth of your baby
- restless baby/crying a lot
- illness or disability of mother or child
- prematurely born
- medication/surgery during breastfeeding
- vomiting and intestinal cramps
- mastitis
- thrush
- much or little milk
- pumping and working
- mouth problems while drinking
What does a consultation look like?
During a home consultation, we observe feeding and observe how your baby latches and drinks (sucks and swallows) at the breast. We also always perform an oral examination to check your baby's oral anatomy. We'll also ask plenty of questions about your baby's progress from pregnancy to the consultation. We can then provide personalized advice. After the consultation, we offer aftercare; you can continue to contact us by phone or app until the issue we came to address has been resolved.
Collaboration with pre-verbal speech therapist
To provide optimal care for oral motor skills, we believe collaboration with a preverbal speech therapist is essential. Lactation consultants and preverbal speech therapists overlap in our work and also in our own expertise. This overlap is particularly valuable for providing optimal support to families. Our colleague Anne specializes in issues related to oral motor skills, bottle-feeding difficulties, the transition from breast to bottle, and much more. If these are the issues, we will readily deploy Anne for additional care.
Specialization in oral motor skills
We can often support babies and parents with practical tips on latching, positions, etc. But sometimes everything goes very well and problems with vacuum, sucking, swallowing, or rapid gagging still persist.
Within our practice, Roxane specializes in oral motor skills, which means she can provide extra care through sucking training to stimulate the muscles in young babies.
Health insurance reimbursement
A lactation consultation may be partially or fully covered if your supplementary health insurance covers lactation care. It's always a good idea to check during your pregnancy; this way, you may be able to access lactation care more easily. Preverbal speech therapy is covered with a referral from your GP.
